This Saturday, “Historical Walks” travels to the distant Uzbekistan and speaks with the president of the Greek Community of Tashkent, Mr. Kostas Politis.
The Uzbeks have a deep affection for the Greeks. They hold Alexander the Great in great admiration and also celebrate Vasilis Hatzipanagi, one of the best Greek footballers, who was born in Tashkent to Greek parents who were political refugees from the Civil War.
How and why did the fighters of the Democratic Army end up in Tashkent? How did they live there? What music did they listen to? Were there any conflicts among them? How long did they stay? How many returned and how many stayed there? What is the Greek Community like today? How is it connected to its past? What problems and challenges does it face?
Can there be a Greek community without a Greek church and without a Greek school? What ultimately unites those who feel Greek and live far from their homeland?
