World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims | 08 Nov. 2024, 13:00

This Saturday’s “Historical Walks” are dedicated to the victims of road traffic collisions.

The statistics are shocking:

  • 1,200,000 people lose their lives every year worldwide.
  • It is the leading cause of death for children and young people aged 5 to 29.
  • Greece is one of the highest-ranking countries in Europe for deaths and injuries.
  • In 2023, 637 people were killed, and another 441 in the first eight months of 2024 (according to ELSTAT).
  • More than 120 people were hit and abandoned by drivers in Greece in the first ten months of 2024, resulting in 12 fatalities.

The National Association SOS Traffic Crimes, whose members have lost loved ones in traffic accidents, is fighting to reduce accidents, prevent them, and support the victims.

This Saturday at 13:00 on Voice of Greece, the president of the association, Giorgos Kouvidis, will discuss traffic crimes in a program that concerns us all. It is not “just bad luck,” but a crime that can be avoided with the right government policies. This is not a utopia – many countries have drastically reduced deaths on the road.

“No death or serious injury on the road is acceptable!”

REMEMBER – SUPPORT – ACT

This year, the World Day of Remembrance coincides with the anniversary of the Polytechnic Uprising, which is why the events will take place on Sunday, November 10, aiming to raise the voice of families and society about the value of human life and the need for preventive measures.

In Athens, the event will take place at 12:00 p.m. in Kotzia Square, with the participation of the Athens Municipal Philharmonic, and in Heraklion, Crete, at 11:00 a.m. in the Church of Saint Mark, followed by a march to the seaside promenade, accompanied by the Heraklion Municipal Philharmonic. Further events will be held in Thessaloniki, Alexandroupolis, and Rhodes in the coming weeks.
