On Monday, 22 June, at 22:00 Athens time, Voice of Greece’s “Our Town”, hosted by Themis Rodamitis, presents a special tribute to the Olympic Games, marking Olympic Day, celebrated around the world on 23 June. From their birth in ancient Greece to their evolution into the world’s foremost sporting event, the Olympic Games have embodied ideals that transcend competition and continue to inspire people across cultures and generations.
“The Olympic Games are among the absolutely essential creations of humankind,” says author Antonis Natsios, who devoted many years to researching and documenting their history in what became a true life’s work. Joining the program, he discusses the origins of the Games, their enduring significance, and the values they have carried through the centuries.
Also in the studio will be journalist Nikos Tsonis, who, through his work with ERT and the press, covered many of the defining moments of modern Greek sport. Drawing on his experiences from Olympic venues around the world, he recalls unforgettable victories, medal ceremonies, and the achievements of athletes such as Pyrros Dimas, Voula Patoulidou, Kostas Kenteris, Ekaterini Thanou, Kakhi Kakhiashvili, Dimitrios Cholidis, and many others.
