The Director of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), Dr. Aristomenis Karageorgis, joins Antonis Karagiannakis on the program “Fair Winds and Following Seas – Saturday Shift” on Voice of Greece, on Saturday, 05 July 2025, at 08:00 Athens time, with a repeat broadcast at 20:00.
Dr. Karageorgis takes us on a journey into the world of HCMR, sharing its history, development, and vision for the future. He speaks about the Centre’s three research vessels:
- the R/V AIGAIO, built at Chalkida Shipyards and launched in December 1985,
- the R/V FILIA, constructed in Piraeus in 1986, 26 meters in length,
- and the deep-submergence vehicle THETIS, a REMORA 2000-type submersible, built by the French company COMEX between 1998–1999.
A member of the renowned Karageorgis shipping family, Dr. Karageorgis expresses hope for the construction of a new, modern research vessel — with expanded capabilities — as the existing flagship, AIGAIO, approaches its 40th year of service.
He also discusses the Greek seas, his recent participation in the Ocean Conference held in Nice, France, and the current goals and activities of HCMR.
