On Wednesday, 21 October 2026, at 22:00 Athens time, Annita Panaretou joins “Remarkable Personalities” with Stavroula Karali on Voice of Greece. She is the author of “Adding to the Memory of the World: Greek Hostages and Prisoners in Nazi and Fascist Camps and Prisons, 1941–1945,” published by Papadopoulos Publishing and honored by the Academy of Athens.
In the second part of the program, Panaretou discusses the final and most harrowing phase of captivity, as Nazi Germany’s defeat draws near but the prisoners’ ordeal is far from over.
The episode examines the execution of prisoners even in the final days of the war, the death marches, and the liberation of the camps. Particular attention is given to Mauthausen, Iakovos Kambanellis, and the story of Antonis, which inspired one of the best-known songs in the “Mauthausen” song cycle.
Produced and presented by Stavroula Karali
Sound editing: Giorgos Kostopoulos
