The program “Historical Walks” with Marilena Katsimi invites listeners on a journey into the often unknown world of Indigenous Peoples, a world very different from the images many of us carry in our imagination.
The impetus for this journey is the new book by Professor Elsa Stamatopoulou, Indigenous Peoples in the International Arena: The Global Movement for Self-Determination (Routledge).
The author, former head of the Secretariat of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and former Director of the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Program at Columbia University, discusses the explosive rise of the international Indigenous movement from the late 1970s through the adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in 2007. She also reflects on the current state of the movement, highlighting its strategies, achievements, and limitations.
Through historical, legal, and cultural analysis, Stamatopoulou explains how the concept of self-determination has been enriched by Indigenous worldviews, by women’s participation, and by struggles for land and climate justice.
The tribute unfolds over two episodes, complemented by music and songs from Indigenous groups worldwide, chosen by the guest herself.
