What does home mean when you can see it, remember it, inherit its stories — but cannot freely return to it?
This Sunday on Infinitely Curious, Katerina Batzaki welcomes filmmaker and human-rights activist Alexia Tsouni to the studio for a conversation about her documentary Khalil, Please Answer, co-directed with Haim Schwarczenberg.
The film preserves the voice of Khalil Abu Yahia, a Palestinian writer, teacher and researcher from Gaza who, while receiving cancer treatment in East Jerusalem, was able to encounter places connected to his family’s history and memory. Khalil was later killed in Gaza in October 2023 along with members of his family.
Alexia Tsouni talks about the man behind the film, the meaning of home, displacement and memory, the ethics of documentary filmmaking, and what happens when a film becomes not only testimony, but an act of remembrance.
Can a camera resist disappearance? And can a recorded voice keep asking us to listen after the person behind it is gone?
