On Wednesday, 28 October 2026, at 08:00 Athens time, “Fair Winds and Following Seas” with Antonis Karagiannakis marks Ohi Day, the anniversary of Greece’s historic “No” in 1940, with a special two-hour broadcast dedicated to the history and traditions of the Presidential Guard.
Guest Panagiotis Moutsakis, who served as an Evzone, shares memories and experiences from his military service. Taking the significance of 28 October 1940 as its starting point, the discussion traces the history of the Presidential Guard from its founding in 1868 to the present, exploring its place in Greece’s national memory.
The program also explores the symbolism of the Evzone uniform: the fustanella’s 400 pleats, representing the years of Ottoman rule, and the red cap, symbolizing the blood shed by those who fought for freedom.
Panagiotis Moutsakis also discusses the demanding training, discipline, and physical endurance required of Evzones, as well as the deep emotion of taking part in the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
A conversation about Ohi Day, the daily lives of the Evzones, and the traditions they keep alive through their service.
