“Did you know that the sky speaks Greek? Many constellations bear the names of gods, heroes and mythical creatures from Greek mythology. Shall we take a journey with Little Astronomer and discover them? Imagine that the stars are dots. Connect the dots and create shapes! Just as the ancient Greeks did on clear nights beneath the sky. They had vivid imaginations and countless questions. How was nature born? Why is every animal different? Why do rivers flow in some places while elsewhere the sea washes over us? What is mankind? In order to answer these questions, the ancient Greeks invented stories about heroic deeds and the loves of gods and mortals. These stories are the myths. And so that this journey never truly ends, whenever you gaze up at the clear night sky, you will once again meet your favourite constellations and their heroes!”
The program “Narratives” – “Stories and Fairy Tales for Children and Adults” presents to listeners of Voice of Greece a narrative and musical journey through the vast galaxy and the constellations of Greek mythology.
On Saturday, 09 May 2026, from 17:00 to 18:00 Athens time, Voice of Greece broadcasts a narration of the book “The Sky Speaks Greek – The Constellations in Greek Mythology” by journalist, author and ERT music producer Litsa Totska. The book’s beautiful illustrations are created by Maria Manoura.
Throughout the narration, listeners will hear emblematic electronic and orchestral compositions by the internationally acclaimed Greek composer and Academy Award winner for Chariots of Fire, Vangelis.
Former university professor, author and critic of children’s literature Giannis S. Papadatos writes in an article for Anagnostis about the book:
“Reading Litsa Totska’s book The Sky Speaks Greek, one realises that we can ‘see’ the sky with its endless constellations not as something distant and unreachable, but as something familiar, tangible and close to us, filled with fascinating narratives that are meaningful in many ways. This is the feeling conveyed by the book, which is written for children but is equally enjoyable for adults. It is as though the sky invites us to look differently at its millions of stars — ‘the golden eyes of the world,’ as Valaoritis called them — to see them as shapes and travel through captivating myths of Greek mythology. Myths with personal, social and cosmological meanings, all symbolic, capable of accompanying us on enchanting journeys of thought and reflection, through both imagination and reality.”
