On Monday, 11 August 2025, at 22:00 Athens time, the Voice of Greece program “Our Town” with Themis Rodamitis presents a compelling tribute to the life and legacy of Alexandros Manthoulis.
In the studio, filmmaker and writer Nikos Theodosiou joins the conversation to shed light on the extraordinary journey of a man whose life story mirrors the upheavals of the 20th-century Greek experience. In 1918, Manthoulis fought in the Gaza campaign as an officer of the Ottoman Army’s 7th Division under Mustafa Kemal (Atatürk), facing the British forces of General Allenby — alongside the legendary Lawrence of Arabia.
Years later, amid the turmoil of the Greek military dictatorship, his son — acclaimed director Roviros Manthoulis — urged him to record his vivid recollections: gripping oral testimonies filled with adventure, survival, and insight into a world in flux.
Drawing from the book “O Περιπλανώμενος Ρωμιός“, which he edited, Nikos Theodosiou will reflect on these singular, adventurous moments from Manthoulis’ life — stories that mirror the broader saga of the Greek people across a century of upheaval.
The program will also feature rare audio recordings of Manthoulis himself — speaking and singing — offering Voice of Greece listeners a rare sonic window into his remarkable world.
