On Wednesday, 30 September, at 13:00 Athens time, journalist Nasia Bouloukou welcomes Ioulia Grapsa to “The Practice of Living” on Voice of Greece. Grapsa, a professor of cardiology and director of cardiology education at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, is internationally recognized for her research and clinical work. She has led a large international team of European Society of Cardiology experts in developing a European framework for Women’s Heart Centres.
For World Heart Day, the program examines women’s heart health and the inequalities that persist in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
The conversation explores heart attack symptoms, which do not always follow the “classic” pattern, and how pregnancy can offer early insight into a woman’s cardiovascular health. It also raises a central question: Has modern medicine relied too heavily on data from men?
Grapsa explains what needs to change, how Women’s Heart Centres work in practice, and how they can bring cardiologists together with gynecologists, internists, oncologists and primary care providers.
In the final part of the conversation, Grapsa discusses her personal and academic journey, the challenges of building an international career in the United Kingdom and the United States, her ties to Greece, and the Greek scientific perspective she brings to her work.
