Mr Vafiadis, president of the Greek Community of Alexandria, Egypt, which has suffered extensive damage over the years and is in danger of being sealed.
As Mr Vafiadis said, it is the largest Greek Orthodox church in Africa, the construction of which began in 1847, while 19 years later the inauguration ceremony took place. It is characteristic that at the back of the church is the seat of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, making it an emblem of Orthodoxy in the center of the city of Alexandria
“All national holidays and the enthronement of the Patriarch are celebrated there. It is a symbol of Orthodoxy for all of Africa”, he said. Mr Vafiadis also appealed to the Greek diaspora and institutions and asked for their support for the salvation of the church.
“The Greek community has shrunk, there are no resources and what we want is for people to know that this church exists and to raise awareness. We want it to continue to exist and function and to be the pride of our Orthodoxy”, he stressed.
President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, will also be informed about this issue, who will be in the city of Alexandria and at the offices of the Greek Community on May 10, in the context of the inauguration that will take place at the Cavafy Museum.
