Captain Nikos Tsoulis on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” | 10 Apr. 2025

Captain Nikos Tsoulis, Director of Studies at the Merchant Marine Academy of Macedonia, shared his journey and reflections on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on Voice of Greece.

“I come from Thessaloniki,” he said, “not from a seafaring family. Still, from early on, I understood the unique opportunities the maritime world could offer. That’s why I chose it — not just for the chance to see the world through its ports and cultures, but because I saw in it the promise of real professional growth. Without a second thought, I stepped aboard.”

With clarity and warmth, he addressed the younger generation: “Don’t just admire the life of a seafarer — fall in love with it. It demands time, effort, and sacrifice, but the rewards it offers are deeply fulfilling.”

He also recalled the voyage that marked his initiation into this life: “I first set sail on August 1st, 1990 — the very day the Gulf War began. It was aboard the tanker M/V NAUKRATIS. We boarded in Taiwan, bound for a war zone. Thankfully, we returned safe.”
