Greek Music Express: GREEK JAZZ PIONEERS: Andreas Polyzogopoulos – Dimitris Kalantzis | 24 Sept. 2024

Trumpet player and composer Andreas Polyzogopoulos studied jazz trumpet at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and the Royal Conservatory of Brussels where he won the Toots Thielemans award. He has recorded five personal albums and appears in more than seventy as a sideman. His later records include a tribute to his favourite band Pink Floyd, followed by “Annica” and the ambient album “One Inch of Love”. In “Petrichor” album, Polyzogopoulos collaborates with Petros Klabanis on the double bass and Wajdi Riahi on the piano.

Dimitris Kalantzis studied piano and music theory at Athens Conservatory, graduating with diplomas in piano and fugue. In 1994 he graduated from the jazz department of Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music with honors and received a scholarship to Berklee College of Music. His albums “Mano’s” and “Modes & Moods”, are jazz tributes to Manos Hadjidakis and Mikis Theodorakis respectively. Kalantzis’ album “Last night”, which we shall be focusing on today, is a jazz look at the past of Greek music with legends Aleka Kanellidou and Elli Paspala, together with younger vocalists Athena Routsi, Terry Vakirtzoglou and Penelope Tzanetaki.
