Ioulia Karapataki recalls: “In my teenage years I listened to everything from r&b and low bap to light folk and rock, I never really had a particular genre of music to sit down and indulge in. I loved listening to everything. A switch was made in my head with rebetiko, in my final year of high school, by a teacher who wanted us to engage with this genre. I had heard the songs from my father, and the teacher told me to sing them and that’s how I started to sing, to understand the lyrics, to understand the music”.
