Michalis Sougioul created the post-war genre of “archontorembetiko”. This is a type of song that combined folk-style lyrics and music with Western-style orchestral influences. As researcher and radio producer Giorgos Tsampras states, ‘archontorembetiko is a creation of leading composers of the light song of that era based on the most representative folk rhythms’. In other words, these were songs that were reminiscent of the folk creations, sharing many of their characteristics, while maintaining the ethos that governed the easy-listening music of the period. Today, we shall be listening to modern recordings of these songs performed by Arleta, Vicky Mosholiou, Glykeria and Babis Tsertos.
