Mimis Plessas and the “Kosmas the Aetolian” oratorio
On Holy Wednesday we will be listening to the oratorio Kosmas the Aetolian by Mimi Plessas, with a libretto by Iakovos Avlitis and with Grigoris Valtinos in the role of the well-known monk of the Greek Orthodox Church. “I have always faced with awe and deep emotion those who defended their beliefs with self-sacrifice, those who were willing to give their lives for an ideal or a higher vision. And suddenly I found myself encountering the life of a man who with his faith alone managed to set up more than 100 schools during the most difficult years of the Ottoman rule, saving our most precious heritage, our Language and Faith. And I, in turn, wanted to save this Great Poem”.
