Historical Walks: The Adventures of the Greek Language (Part I) I 08 Feb. 2025

Greek Language Day is celebrated annually on February 9. This day was established in 2017 by the Hellenic Parliament and is linked to the anniversary of the death of Dionysios Solomos.

On this occasion, the program Historical Walks with Marilena Katsimi features Professor Eleni Karantzola, a linguist specializing in the history of the Greek language and language policy at the University of the Aegean, for two episodes dedicated to the adventures of the Greek language from prehistory to the present.

Through this journey, we explore not only the transformations of the Greek language but also how it reflects the social, political, and cultural changes of history. Like every language, Greek is not merely a means of communication; it is a bearer of identity, memory, culture, and both historical continuity and discontinuity.
