Nikos Charalambides, Executive Director of Greenpeace Greece, on “Saturday Shift” | 12 Apr. 2025

Nikos Charalambides, Executive Director of the Greek office of Greenpeace, is the featured guest on “Saturday Shift”, the weekend special edition of the radio program “Fair Winds and Following Seas” with Antonis Karagiannakis on Voice of Greece, airing on Saturday, April 12th, at 08:00 a.m.

In a conversation that navigates the pressing concerns of our era, Mr. Charalambidis speaks passionately about the environment, ecology, climate change, and the sea—a realm intimately woven into our daily existence and cultural memory.
Among many compelling observations, he remarks:
“The sea is life, inspiration, love. It gives us breath, and without it, the rest of the world cannot thrive or even function. The sea is a living organism, with a heart and a soul, and we must safeguard it with all we have—whatever the cost.”

Reflecting on the state of marine ecosystems, Charalambidis highlights a paradox:
“We know more about the surface of the Moon than we do about the depths of our own oceans and the organisms that inhabit them. In Greece, unfortunately, we move at a glacial pace when it comes to protecting the environment and our seas. Marine pollution and the need for decisive measures remain low on the national agenda. We suffer from a lack of transparency and swiftness in decision-making. At present, we are scrambling to catch up with European environmental legislation—though, to be fair, there has been some progress in recent years.”

A radio voyage through the marine world, environmental urgency, and the changing climate—an essential listen for anyone who cares about the future of our planet.
