Capt. Michalis Karpathakis from Viannos, Crete, spent 36 years and seven months at sea. He first sailed in April 1964. On 5 July 2005, with tears in his eyes, he walked down the gangway of the last ship he commanded.
Speaking to “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on Voice of Greece from Keratokampos in southern Crete, where he is vacationing, he shares stories from his long life at sea. He has written three books, «Δόκιμος καταστρώματος», «Ιστορίες αρμύρας» and «Θαλασσόλυκοι του Αιγαίου», and is currently preparing a fourth.
Today, he takes listeners back to Hamburg in 1971, recounting an incident aboard the German vessel M/V UBENA, whose difficult German captain created a problem that Capt. Michalis ultimately managed to resolve.
