“Fair Winds and Following Seas – Saturday Shift” with Antonis Karagiannakis welcomes captain and poet Alekos Antoniadis.
His grandfather and father were sailors and fishermen, and he naturally followed the path of the sea. He first sailed on the family’s caiques, and in 1973 he joined the M/V Kolokotronis, marking the beginning of his long maritime career.
Captain Alekos expresses himself mainly through his poetry—many of his poems have been set to music—capturing his experiences at sea: the struggles, the joys and sorrows, the emotions and reflections gathered over the years aboard ships. Unpublished poems such as “Sailors”, “If You Get Wet”, “Our Horn Is Blowing”, “Sailing On”, “The Storm” and many more, along with personal stories, are featured during the program.
