Captain Dimitris Magoutsos from Thasos speaks on “Fair Winds & Following Seas” and Voice of Greece.
“It is a very particular profession, that of the seafarer, and not everyone can follow it. Your very first experience on a ship, as a rookie sailor, and in general that first voyage, is decisive for every seafarer and their development,” notes Captain Dimitris, who has 42 years of sea service.
After graduating from the Higher Public Merchant Marine Academy of Nea Michaniona, he embarked for the first time in August 1984 in Rotterdam, bound for Venezuela, on the M/V KONKAR TRITON.
He found a vessel almost immediately to begin his career, as at that time it was somewhat difficult to secure a berth. Speaking about the captain’s role, he stresses that a captain must inspire the crew through his conduct, his ethos, and his knowledge.
