Captain Kostas Malichoutsakis, from Pyles on the island of Karpathos, shares memories from a lifetime at sea on the Voice of Greece program “Fair Winds and Following Seas.”
“I have 46 years of service at sea and I have never regretted choosing this path of ships and the sea. I travelled from 1964 until 2010,” Captain Kostas says, among other things.
In his own distinctive way, he also reflects on the deeper meaning of the sea:
“For me — and for Greece — the sea is wealth, prosperity, life. It is everything. All my relatives, my entire family, were sailors, so I naturally followed the same path. I vividly remember when an uncle of mine, a captain, took me by the hand when I was seven or eight years old, brought me aboard a ship docked at Karvouniarika, led me up to the bridge and gave me a parallel ruler and a nautical chart. The best gift I ever received.”
