Captain Michalis Fragkias, from the seafaring island of Chios, describes in his own words what the sea means to him and when he first went to sea.
“Immediately after graduating from the Chios Boys’ High School, I left for the ships and I have never regretted it. It was July 17, 1962. The M/V ATLANTIC SUN LIGHT was passing through Chios and, somehow, even though others were also looking to go to sea, I went aboard to load grain from Russia bound for Cuba. I was fortunate and blessed to serve and to study ships and the sea for 58 consecutive years,” says Captain Michalis.
He also makes special mention of safety, life onboard, and the regulations on ships and in the lives of seafarers. He teaches all of this and shares his knowledge with young and active sailors through seminars and his book “ISM CODE – ISO STANDARDS – SAFETY WATCH”, published by the Eugenides Foundation.
