Captain Panagiotis Karoutsos on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” (Part II) | 20 May 2026

Captain Panagiotis Karoutsos, Crew Manager at Atlantic Bulk Carriers, speaks on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” and Voice of Greece.

“I first went to sea in 1981, sailing from Chalkida to Argentina on a logging voyage aboard the M/V EL OCEAN, a 37,000-ton cargo ship. The crew was good, there were other cadets as well, and the boatswain kept a close eye on me. So I worked, learned many things, and my first voyage was an enjoyable experience. Of course, they initiated me as a sailor the first time I crossed the Equator,” Captain Panagiotis recalls with nostalgia and joy.

“I listened to Voice of Greece devotedly throughout my entire maritime career. For all sailors, it was entertainment, information, and comfort. Sometimes we would gather around the radio room receiver and listen together, and other times through the world-band transistor radio that I still keep today.

There was a strong bond among the crew on every voyage I made — something I still deeply miss,” concludes Captain Panagiotis Karoutsos.
