Captain Vasilis Hazapis, from seafaring Andros, speaks on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” and Voice of Greece.
His mother did not want him to go to sea. She pleaded with him right up to the moment he boarded the bus to leave his village, Vrachno in Andros. They were difficult times, and the sea was a one-way road.
“I first signed on aboard the M/V Michail. The tanker belonged to the Andrike Shipping Company of Mr. Goulandris. I signed on together with my father. It was 1966, departing from Skaramangas for the Mediterranean,” Captain Vasilis recounts.
