First Engineer Dimitris Vretos from Kasos on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” | 20 Oct. 2025

First Engineer Dimitris Vretos from seafaring Kasos talks about his beginnings and his life at sea.

“Ever since I was a child, I used to listen to the older men telling stories about their experiences, their voyages, and their lives on the ships and I loved it. There were sailors in my family too. I wanted to leave, to see the world, so I enrolled at the Pythagoras maritime school,” says Dimitris Vretos.

“For me, the sea is a way of life. It gives you many things, above all, financial comfor, because the seaman’s profession can be very rewarding, as long as you love it, and love the sea itself. An unforgettable moment in my career was the night in 1987 when Greece won the European Basketball Championship. We were docked at the port of Tongo, and all of us Greeks were listening to the game on the radio. When the game ended, the ship’s horn started blowing and the local authorities came to see what was happening. It was crazu!

We lived something similar in 2004, when Greece won the Euro football championship. We were in a port in Georgia, all of us Greeks again. Unforgettable and deeply moving moments,” says Dimitris Vretos.
