Giannis Tryfillis, a member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping, joins “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on Voice of Greece.
Representing the fourth generation of the Gourdomichalis shipping family (and the Fatsis-Karras family from Kardamyla, Chios) on his mother’s side, and the third generation of a shipowning family from Kythera on his father’s side, Tryfillis reflects on Greece’s enduring maritime tradition and the values that have shaped the country’s shipping industry.
“Greece and shipping have shared the same course for thousands of years. The speed and security that the sea has provided throughout our development have been unmatched, both for the Greek economy and for the professional opportunities it has created,” he says.
Asked what lies behind the success of Greeks at sea, Tryfillis points to the country’s centuries-long relationship with the maritime world.
“Greece has grown and evolved alongside the sea for centuries. As Greeks, we have a strong desire to create, to learn, and to adapt. We are resourceful when it comes to shipping, eager to test our limits, and driven by a spirit of discovery and adventure. That is probably why we continue to excel.“
