This episode of “Irregular Notes” with Stelios Ioannidis is dedicated to Georges Moustaki -the French singer-songwriter of Greek descent.
Moustaki was born in Alexandria, Egypt, to a Greek family with ties to Asia Minor, Ioannina, Zakynthos, and Corfu. He often spoke about his connection to Greek culture and to the multicultural city where he grew up:
“I was born in Alexandria, and so I have a special sensitivity to everything Greek — to what the Ptolemies brought and sowed in my birthplace. I am Greek through my father, my mother, and my grandfather.”
He became known for writing thoughtful, melodic songs – sometimes political, sometimes personal – quietly leaving his mark over the decades.
