PASOK MEP Sakis Arnaoutoglou on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” | 20 May 2025

PASOK MEP Sakis Arnaoutoglou discussed the recent visit of 40 mayors and local officials from Greece’s small islands and remote mountain villages to Brussels, where they brought forward the most pressing challenges facing their regions.

In our meetings, I saw genuine interest and commitment from key EU figures—Mr. Raffaele Fitto, Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms; Mr. Costas Kadis, Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans; and Mr. Apostolos Tzitzikostas, Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism. Their focus on improving living conditions in Europe’s remote regions was both encouraging and essential,” Arnaoutoglou noted.

He went on to say: “If the limbs—our hands and feet—are weak, the whole body suffers. In the same way, the EU must protect and strengthen its outermost regions, which are its vital extensions.”

An in-depth conversation on the issues raised at the European Parliament, touching on the future of Greece’s smaller islands and villages—places that embody the resilience and spirit of the nation.
