Radio operator Makis Iordanidis, a graduate and former fellow student of mine at the Higher Command School of the Greek Army on Rhodes (ASDEN), joins “Fair Winds and Following Seas” to talk about his transition from deep-sea shipping to the pilotage service at the Port of Piraeus.
He describes the unique aspects of this specific profession and work environment, where pilots handle the arrivals and departures of various types of vessels at Greece’s busiest port.
“Sometimes as many as 60 ships arrive or depart daily—up to 1,500 per month. Traffic at the Port of Piraeus has increased, especially after COSCO arrived in Greece,” he notes.
