Second Mate Dimitris Smetis, from the village of Sofades in the prefecture of Karditsa, takes hold of the wheel of the program “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on Voice of Greece.
“It takes persistence, discipline, and great effort to achieve your goal, in my case, earning my second mate’s license. The demands in the shipping industry are high, and you have to adapt to a new environment where everything moves and changes very quickly,” Captain Dimitris emphasizes.
Regarding his career so far, he says that “everything turned out much better than I expected, both in deep-sea shipping and coastal shipping, but in the end, coastal shipping won me over”.
For young people starting now, he stresses that “to succeed, they must love this profession, acquire as much knowledge as possible, stay focused on their goals, chase their dreams, and listen to their hearts”.
