On Saturday, 13 June 2026, “Saturday Shift” welcomes Serafeim Kapros, President of the Department of Shipping, Trade and Transport at the University of the Aegean.
Professor Kapros discusses his lifelong connection to the sea, the maritime heritage of Chios and its seafaring community, as well as the Department of Shipping, Trade and Transport, its 25-year history, and its academic programs. He highlights the strong employability of the department’s graduates, noting that they are absorbed into the shipping industry almost immediately after completing their studies.
“The graduates of the Department of Shipping enter the job market very quickly. The employment rates of our students within shipping companies are exceptionally high, and most—if not all—secure positions within a very short period of time,” he notes.
Asked what advice he would offer young people studying maritime subjects, Professor Kapros emphasizes the importance of curiosity and commitment:
“Young people need to develop a genuine passion for this field. Anyone studying maritime affairs should be open to exploring it in depth and understanding its many dimensions. Internships help students gain firsthand insight into this global industry. Those entering the field must embrace both innovation and the unknown. Shipping is not a single discipline; it is an applied field that draws on many sciences, with maritime transport as its central case study. In that sense, shipping is truly an interdisciplinary field.”
