“The introduction of postal voting ensures the equal and unhindered participation of all Greeks living abroad in national elections,” stressed Filippos Fortomas, MP for the Cyclades with New Democracy and Chair of the Hellenic Parliament’s Special Permanent Committee on the Greek Diaspora, speaking today, Monday 09 March, on Voice of Greece.
Speaking on the program “Greece in the World”, hosted by journalist Giorgos Dionysopoulos, the Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on the Greek Diaspora referred to the next steps regarding the implementation of the provisions included in the Ministry of the Interior bill titled “Designation of an Electoral District for the Greek Diaspora – Facilitation of the Exercise of Voting Rights through Postal Voting,” which was passed by Parliament last week.
As Mr Fortomas noted, the bill effectively implements the constitutional principle of universal suffrage, “a reform that the New Democracy government has been consistently promoting since 2019.”
He also underlined the strategic importance of the Greek diaspora for national strength, development, and the preservation of the Greek language and culture, noting that postal voting gives every Greek man and woman around the world the opportunity to participate equally in shaping the future of the country.
