An hour-long tribute to Stelios Vamvakaris…
“To me, music is a gift, something divine. It belongs to all the people who have the talent and engage in what they love. Kindness and reverence is engraved in the soul. These things are blended together and a musical instrument will help express what is in their soul.”
Stelios Vamvakaris (March 2, 1947-June 17, 2019)
Composer and bouzouki virtuoso Stelios Vamvakaris was one of the first musicians to immerse themselves in the common roots of rebetiko and the blues.
In 1988, alongside American blues musician Louisiana Red he recorded the album “Blues meets Rebetiko”, containing 8 blues songs performed with bouzouki and baglamas.
Stelios Vamvakaris, the second son of rebetiko pioneer Markos Vamvakaris, was born in Piraeus on March 2, 1947. He began playing music at the age of 12, alongside his father.
In the course of his career, he gave several concerts abroad performing his own songs and also songs of his father Markos.
Stelios Vamvakaris died on June 17, 2019, at the age of 72.
