Istorima – Connect with your History | 14.08.2023-20.08.2023

Stories of people from all over Greece: of their hometowns, stories of love, stories that changed Greece or defined it, modern or old stories. Stories that are not recorded in the history books and that could easily be lost in time.

This week’s episodes you shouldn’t miss:

Monday 14 August: ”I saw the warship Elli going down

Evangelia Messinezi-Vassilopoulou recounts the dramatic moments she experienced on August 15, 1940, seeing the torpedoing of the cruiser ELLI, in the port of Tinos.

Wednesday 16 August: ”I witnessed the torpedoing of ELLI in Tinos island

On August 15th, 1940, little Katerina Marquizou witnesses the explosions from the torpedoes that sank ELLI. A few days later, at the hospital on the island where the injured sailors are being treated, he hears a song she would never forget.

Friday 18 August: ”My birth was the reason my father survived”

In the summer of 1944, in Nice, while the local collaborators of the Germans carry out indiscriminate arrests and executions, the birth of a child saves the life of a resistance fighter. A short time later, at the Kokkinia roadblock, Greek traitors lead hundreds of patriots to their death.

On Sundays, istorima has two new episodes coming in – one in Greek (with Greek Audio) and one in English (with English Voiceover).

This Sunday 20 August:

”Whatever happened to the warship ELLI”

The bronze parts were sold, the bridge was torn to pieces, the gunpowder has become fireworks for children… Zannakis Kalamaras recounts what happened to the wreck of the ELLI, which was torpedoed on Tinos by an Italian submarine on August 15, 1940.

”The lost El Greco” [English Voiceover]

In the middle of the 16th century, the painter Domenikos Theotokopoulos, who would later become widely known as El Greco, painted an icon of the Virgin Mary in Crete. Wars, revolutions, massacres, and persecutions followed. People fled, taking this icon with them across the Aegean, and the identity of its creator was lost in time. Until one morning in 1983, in Syros.

Monday – Friday new episodes are available from 21.00, while Sunday’s first episode in Greek is available at 11.00 and the second one (in English) is available at 17.00. (Athens time)
You can find the episodes on both ERTecho radio plarform and on the Voice of Greece website and app, under the Podcasts category.

Info

Istorima was created by journalist Sofia Papaioannou and historian Katherine Fleming and is implemented with a founding grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), as part of its initiative to Empower and Restart Youth.
Istorima’s podcasts and videos arise from the work of more than 1,000 young researchers across Greece, who take on the task of finding and collecting personal stories of people and stories of their hometowns. Life stories, love stories, stories that changed or defined us, stories modern or old. Stories that are not recorded in the official history books and that could easily be lost in time.
