Vassilis Koufiotis: ”The Greeks of Morocco are safe” | 11 Sept. 2023

The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco has surpassed 2,500, with over 2,000 injured. However, about 200 Greeks living in the North African country are reported safe, emphasized Vasilis Koufiotis, entrepreneur and president of the Greek Community in Morocco, during the radio show “Our Global Voice” on Voice of Greece, hosted by Petros Diplas and Dimitris Kontogiannis.

Mr. Koufiotis, who moved to Morocco from France approximately 30 years ago, noted that most Greeks reside in Casablanca—around 250 kilometers from Marrakesh, which was near the earthquake’s epicenter—and in Rabat, the administrative capital of the country. They work in various professions, including doctors, pharmacists, and others. He also mentioned that rising temperatures have affected Morocco, which is facing drought issues and has turned to renewable energy sources and hydrogen for electricity production.
