March 8, International Women’s Day, and our choice for today is Despoina Rafail, whom we regard as the most impressive folk, laiko voice of her generation. Her first personal album, “Little Summers” contains ten contemporary art and folk songs composed by Vaggelis Machairas. What is particularly fascinating in the case of Despoina Rafail is her timbre, reminding us of the greatest voices of Greek laiko song and, above all, of the one and only Vicky Mosholiou. But at the same time, Rafail is absolutely contemporary in her approach. “Although my great love is folk singing”, she notes, “I am always open to different influences and genres”.
