What is the sound of Omonoia, one of the oldest and most central squares of Athens? The square lent its name to an entire sub-genre of laiko popular song, produced by a range of recording companies that were headquartered in the neighbouring streets of Omonoia: Panivar, Intersound, Polyphone, Sonora, and many others. Aesthetically, the sound of Omonoia Square lies at the crossroads of traditional and folk – some called it ‘sentimental’ song, others regard it as the starting point of ‘skyladiko’. One way or another, it is always fascinating to revisit the solid performances and intense atmosphere of these erotic songs.
