Captain Antonis Fytousis on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” (Part II) | 23 Jan. 2025

Captain Antonis Fytousis, from the village of Pitios in northern Chios, continued his storytelling and dive into the past with two incidents and events that marked his long career at sea. He didn’t fail to mention that, besides skills, the factor of luck is also essential.

In 1992, aboard the 150,000-ton OBOE vessel named EIRINI L, they arrived frozen and exhausted in Quebec on New Year’s Day, carrying oil from northern England. The Canadians welcomed them as heroes, as they were in dire need of the cargo. What was supposed to be an 8-day voyage stretched into 18 days, filled with countless hardships and trials.

He also recounted a rescue story from the year 2000 in the Persian Gulf. A Filipino crew member under his command was bleeding heavily, and they were assisted by an American vessel sailing in the area, which was equipped with all the necessary means to handle such a challenging situation.
