The captain of the fishing boat Maria, Nikos Bitros from Aegina, talks about his love for the sea and his island, how he entered the fishing profession, the challenges the industry faces, and whether there is a future for young people in this maritime field.
“My family’s boats were the Agios Nikolaos, Maria, and Maria again, while the biggest fish I’ve caught so far was a 250-kilo tuna,” says Captain Nikos, adding: “I wouldn’t trade Aegina for any island in the world. It’s my home, and I have no regrets about the life I’ve spent at sea, with which I have lived and existed since I was a small child.
