The Greek National Anniversary of March 25th on Voice of Greece

On Tuesday, March 25, 2025, on the day of our national anniversary, Voice of Greece will celebrate the day with Greeks all over the world through a rich festive program that includes special tributes, interviews, and music.

Specifically:

At 08:00 AM Athens time on Tuesday, the tribute episode of the show “Fair Winds and Following Seas” with Antonis Karagiannakis will be broadcast, featuring Fotis Papathanassiou, Director of the B & M Theocharakis Foundation of Visual Arts and Music, and Associate Professor of Cultural Diplomacy at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Paris. The show examines the significance of Philhellenism worldwide, with Lord Byron as a leading figure, along with many other unsung heroes of the era, including sailors and seafarers.

Next, at 10:00 AM Athens time, a special episode of the show “Historical Walks” with Marilena Katsimi will be aired, where she speaks with director Dimitris Indares about his documentary Lenaki, the Curse of Fire. The film, using a folk song about a scandalous love affair from the pre-revolutionary period, which appears in various versions across Greece, uncovers the lost traces of a passionate love story, confronting us with tradition, myth, curse, intergenerational trauma, and the power of forgiveness.

At 11:00 AM Athens time, Stelios Ioannidis will take over with the show “Irregular Notes”, presenting a two-hour ‘live’ festive music program featuring works from both famous and anonymous creators who wrote songs for March 25th, the most important date in the history of modern Greece.

On Tuesday afternoon, at 13:00 Athens time, Thanasis Houpis will connect ‘live’ with representatives of the Greek diaspora from around the world on the show “Hellenes Everywhere”, to talk about how they honor the fighters of the 1821 Revolution.

Immediately after, at 14:00 Athens time, Hercules Economou will curate and present a musical tribute with compositions of our national poet, Dionysios Solomos, on the English-language show “Greek Music Express”, while at 15:00, Maria Koutsimpiri and the show The Elves of Tradition” will explore “the Greek Revolution of 1821 through folk songs” in a festive musical program from the archive of Greek Radio for the National Anniversary, featuring folk songs from Epirus, Roumeli, and the Peloponnese, referring to figures and events of the pre-revolutionary period and the 1821 Revolution. The songs are performed by one of the greatest artists of genuine folk music, the iconic Epirus singer Savvas Siatras, accompanied by four excellent musicians of traditional music: Vasilis Papageorgiou (clarinet), Konstantinos Kikilis (violin), Kostas Karras (lute), and Ilias Moutsos (tambourine).

At 17:00 Athens time, Giannis Papoutsakis will take us on a “Journey Basking in Greek Light” from the studio of Voice of Greece ‘live’ for two hours. His guests will be actors Lefteris Eleftheriadis and Olga Mourgela, who will read texts and poems for March 25th, while folk and art songs will be played with the voices of Irini Pappa, Nikos Xylouris, Lakis Pappas, Giannis Poulopoulos, and other great Greek artists.

Finally, at 19:00, Dimitris Kontogiannis and the show “Our Global Voice” will broadcast ‘live’ from the studio of Voice of Greece with representatives of the Diaspora from New York, along with Maira Myrogianni, Secretary General of Overseas Greeks and Public Diplomacy, who will share her impressions of the anniversary celebrations in South Africa, where she will be on that day as part of her visit to diaspora communities, clubs, and schools in the country.
