1923: After the uprooting and exile of the Greeks of Asia Minor, the working classes endured absolute misery in their labor conditions.

The working class took to the streets demanding humane conditions, the eight-hour workday, and increases in meager wages. The strike begun by the bread workers spread across various sectors, transforming into a General Strike, with a mass of determined people sweeping away everything inhumane in its path…

On 23 August, the mobilization reached its climax at Pasalimani. Everything had come to a standstill… The authorities responded with violent repression, executing 11 strikers in cold blood, injuring another 100, and arresting 500 “troublemakers.” The strike came to an end, but Pandora’s box had been opened: the governments of the bourgeois state could now feel heavily the breath and the power of the workers…
