The Principle of the Declared Majority: the story behind the story | 11 Aug. 2025

On this day, exactly 150 years ago, the Principle of the Declared Majority (Dedilomeni) was applied for the first time.

The date was 11 August 1875… Charilaos Trikoupis presented his plan to (supposedly…) free the political stage from the dominance of the King. In short, the Principle of the Declared Majority meant that the King (then George I) could no longer appoint as prime minister whomever he wished, but had to take into account the results of parliamentary elections.

The country was at a difficult crossroads. Trikoupis had just failed in the elections he himself had called as interim prime minister after the coup staged by Voulgaris—an episode that went down in history as the “Stilitika.”

Nikolas Angelidis and the program “Time in Greece” dive into history and bring you the events of that pivotal moment, step by step…
