1975–2025: A Tribute to 50 Years of the Greek Constitution (Part IΙ) | 06 Sept. 2025, 17:00-18:00

A particularly significant, historical, and educational tribute marking the 50th anniversary of the Greek Constitution is presented by the program “Narratives –  Stories and Fairy Tales for All Ages“.

In the second part of the tribute, on Saturday, 6 September 2025, at 17:00-18:00 Athens time, on Voice of Greece, the program narrates excerpts from the book “Στα χρόνια του Τρικούπη” (In the Years of Trikoupis) by Yolanda Chatzi, published by Kedros.

With engaging texts, authentic photographs from that era, and satirical cartoons accompanied by humorous verses from contemporary newspapers, the author seeks to bring the time of Charilaos Trikoupis to life while presenting the most significant historical, political, and social events of the political upheavals in Greece at that time.

“…The dethronement of a king and the election of a new one, political factions and competing groups, secret diplomatic negotiations and foreign interventions, negotiations and secret agreements, progressive ideas and conservative hesitations, disagreements and internal crises, governmental instability and student movements, corruption and meritocracy, ruling parties and opposition, modernization and development.  A hundred years ago, in the dusty streets of Athens with grumpy cab drivers and elegant passengers. A hundred years ago, with oil and gas lamps, wells and the jugs of Uncle Giannis, the potter.  A hundred years ago, from handicraft to small industry and the first industrial units, from sailboats to steamships, from folk art to the academic painting of Munich, from the traditional fustanella and trousers to Western-style dresses and crinolines, from local dances to quadrilles and mazurkas, from women confined to their homes to the progressive female editors of Kallirroi Parren’s ‘The Women’s Journal’”. (From the author’s note).

Produced and presented by Maria Karagiannaki Iona

Broadcast: Saturday, 06.09.2025, 17:00–18:00 Athens time
