“The writer who couldn’t write” | 07 Nov. 2026, 19:00

And evening comes again, and under my pillow I hide the things I’ve gathered here and there… “You’re stupid.” “You can’t write or count.” “You get everything wrong. You don’t try hard enough…”

“Narratives – Stories and Fairy Tales for All Ages” presents “The writer who couldn’t write,” an entertaining true story by children’s author Santi Antoniou, published by Kaleidoscope, on Saturday, 7 November 2026, from 19:00 to 20:00 Athens time on Voice of Greece.

Drawing on her own elementary school experiences, the author offers a humorous account of the relentless demands of daily schoolwork. School doesn’t seem to be her strong suit. Spelling, accent marks, reading, the alphabet, writing, division, multiplication… None of it is particularly exciting, so little Santi looks up at the sky and, together with her rabbit, Aris, creates worlds of her own that make her happy. Because things are far more exciting in the world of stories and imagination!

The book’s illustrator, Chryso Charalambous, follows little Santi’s daily life through beautiful, richly colored illustrations and sketches, inviting children and adults to recognize and relate to the difficulties the author describes.

“I remember it clearly: I was a very happy girl until I started first grade. That was when I realized things weren’t quite right. Before the alphabet, accent marks, and spelling began to give me trouble, Dad and I used to write verses together. I was the best at proverbs and at dreaming up exciting stories! It’s true that my teacher often lost patience with me, and so did Dad at home: ‘How can such a clever child not know which Greek letter to use for the “ee” sound?’”

A writer who couldn’t write?! How strange. Then how did she write this book? “Word by word, step by step, falling down and getting back up, with endless patience! And evening comes again, and under my pillow I hide the things I’ve gathered here and there…”
