On Sunday, September 7, 2025, at 10:00 Athens time, the program “Greeks Around the World – Greece in Denmark” with Elina Stamatatou welcomes midwife Marilena Alevra.
Originally from the Peloponnese, Marilena Alevra grew up in Haidari. After finishing high school and following a discussion with one of her teachers, she decided to study midwifery. That was the beginning of a journey into a profession she loves, but one that also made her aware of the problems that exist in Greece, especially in the healthcare sector.
Due to the situation in midwifery in Greece, and after working in various other fields, she sought a midwife position abroad for a better future. She moved to Denmark, where she started taking the required language courses in order to work in healthcare, while at the same time working as a waitress and hotel maid.
The path to midwifery in Denmark was not easy: it took a lot of effort, countless applications and rejections, certification and practical training. Today, she is successfully working as a midwife at Herlev Hospital.
