The Greeks of Australia (Part II) | 11 Oct. 2025, 13:00

In this Saturday’s episode of “Historical Walks”, we continue our journey to Australia. This time, we focus on the great wave of post-war migration.

From which corners of Greece did the migrants set out on their long journey, and what conditions did they encounter upon arriving in Australia? Was their experience, after all, a “cursed exile” or the “promised land” they had dreamed of?

Our companion on this historical and emotional journey is historian and author Kostas Katsapis, who teaches Cultural History of Post-war Greece at Panteion University and Public History at the Hellenic Open University.

In his books “Australia: 10 Stories” and “Australia: The Return“, he masterfully blends history and literature, shedding light on the many-layered paths of migrants and the ways in which exile shapes different experiences and emotions — even within the same family.

The episode features songs of exile from Greece, as well as Australian tunes of the era, capturing the atmosphere and stories of the people we speak about.
