Tariffs, Protectionism, and… “Taco” Trump: A Historical Journey | 26 July 2025, 13:00

This Saturday, “Historical Walks” takes us on a journey from the great trading empires of the 17th century to the aggressive tariff policies of Donald Trump today.

Guest in the Voice of Greece studio is Panos Tsakloglou, Professor of International and European Economic Studies at the Athens University of Economics and Business, and former Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, responsible for social security.

In clear and vivid language, Professor Tsakloglou unravels the long history of protectionism, weighs its pros and cons, analyzes major “trade wars,” and explains how tariffs imposed by a single country can impact the global economy and consumers around the world.

The discussion is accompanied by music that brings economic history to life: from Baroque compositions of the mercantilist era and Interwar jazz, to AI-generated pop songs flooding the internet and mocking Trump’s “tariff games” with China and Europe.

Produced and presented by Marilena Katsimi
Broadcast: Saturday, 26 July 2025, 13:00–14:00 Athens time.
