“From 17 March 1948 to 13 April 1949, an important chapter in the collective struggle of working-class women was written at the Chios camp as they defended the right to freedom of thought and expression, and the new world that was emerging. Women and young children, detained because they were relatives of fighters in the Democratic Army of Greece, as well as those deemed ‘dangerous’ (workers, teachers, doctors, scientists, journalists, lawyers, actresses and others), were seized from their homes and thrown into the camp on a single ‘charge’: through the ranks of the Communist Party of Greece and the resistance organizations EAM-ELAS, EPON and National Solidarity, they had taken part in ‘the world’s great celebration,’ resisting the ‘haunted night’ of the Second World War.”
